a safe haven in the Mediterranean

Malta is called the jewel of the Mediterranean for a reason. With its crystalline waters, rich heritage and good quality of life, Malta is an ideal bridge between Africa and Europe, merging the easy-going island way of life and the busier metropolitan city lifestyle.

Malta’s Nomad Residence Permit opens the door to non-EU nationals who would like to keep their jobs and careers but are able to work remotely from anywhere.

Remote work is more popular now than it has ever been before, and digital nomads are on the increase.

With this one-year permit, that’s renewable twice over, for a total stay of three years, eligible applicants can benefit from life in a safe and secure country that has a lot to offer, without sacrificing their career progress and without switching jobs.

For nomads hailing from South Africa, working remotely from Malta is a breeze, as the two countries share a time zone, and there is no need to adjust working hours, making the transition between countries as smooth as ever.

English is one of Malta’s two official languages and is the main language of operation for most businesses. Locals are fluent in the language, and with 1 out of 5 residents being expats, this is certainly no surprise.

Malta already hosts a small South African expat community, among the many other cultures that every day continue adding value to the country’s multicultural lifestyle.

With such a vast network of likeminded individuals, there is no shortage of digital nomad events and coworking spaces, and it is no difficult feat to meet new people and make friends.

One of the greatest benefits of Malta is its small size. It is easy to get around the island, and one can cross from one side to the other within the hour.

For South Africans, getting around is a little easier, as Malta follows the left-hand drive system, and with 300 days of sunshine, you will want to be out and about, exploring the island, its lovely history and the winding roads of its old cities and towns.

The strong internet connection, with nationwide 5G connectivity, makes it even easier to work from wherever you desire, be it your rental living room, a coworking office space or straight from the beach.

Other attractions ensure there is plenty to do. It does not matter whether you are a history buff, an extreme sports enthusiast, a party animal or a sun, sand, and sea lover – there is something for everybody in Malta.

To this, add the country’s great daily connections to Europe and the rest of the Med, and this ensures you will not feel isolated.

To be eligible, you will need to present a valid travel document, proof of income and an employment contract or agreement outside of Malta.

It does not matter whether you are employed with a company, self-employed or offer freelance work within any industry, as long as you are registered as carrying out this business abroad.

The minimum threshold of income is €32,400 annually with the possibility of your spouse and children joining as well.

The entire application process takes place online and in just 30 days, this could be your next adventure.
